2017 Coca-Cola 600 Race Results – Austin Dillon Wins His First Race
By Alex Herbst
Another Memorial Day race, and another first-time winner in Charlotte. Austin Dillon used fuel mileage to earn his first Cup Series win in the Coca-Cola 600.
The Coca-Cola 600 is one of the most grueling and challenging races in all of stock car racing. NASCAR‘s longest night can often be settled in the final 100 miles of the event, with that extra distance making all the difference. On Sunday night, it did make the difference, with Austin Dillon earning his first career Cup Series win at Charlotte.
In a race with tons of twists and turns, it all came down to fuel mileage at the end. Jimmie Johnson looked as if he was going to coast to victory on fumes, until he ran dry on Lap 399 out of 400. That left Austin Dillon to inherit the lead, and coast to the checkered flag, ahead of Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., the two men who dominated the race.
Much like 2016, Martin Truex Jr. and his Furniture Row Racing team had the dominant car on the night. Leading the most laps and taking advantage of an hour and forty minute rain delay, Truex easily could have cruised to victory lane if not for pit strategy. Instead, he will have to settle for two stage wins, joined by Kyle Busch who won the opening stage of the night.
Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the night came shortly after the green flag fell. Around lap 17, Jeffrey Earnhardt had a part failure in the rear end, which sent a piece through Chase Elliott’s nose. This led to an oil leak, causing Brad Keselowski to lose control and slam into the #24 Chevy. Both cars were out on the spot.

Austin Dillon’s victory caps off a surprising day in motorsports, with Sebastian Vettel’s victory for Ferrari for the first time since 2001 at Monaco, and Takuma Sato’s big win in the 101st Indianapolis 500. It proved to be a day (and night) of surprising conclusions, all to the benefit of the racing fans.
