By Alex Herbst
Lewis Hamilton dominated the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday for his sixth win in Montreal, but all the drama was developing behind him.
A dominating weekend was just what the doctor ordered for Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes AMG Petronas team. After falling behind by a full race length in the championship to Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, the former world champion was looking to exact his revenge at one of his best tracks. Montreal, Canada was where Hamilton earned his first pole, first win, and now yet another victory on the 2017 campaign.

Hamilton, who won the pole on Saturday and tied Ayrton Senna for second all-time in top starting spots with 65, led every lap en route to victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Valtteri Bottas came home in second to make is a sweep of the top two spots for Mercedes. And for the third consecutive race, Daniel Ricciardo came home in third for Red Bull Racing.
The race began with carnage in turn 3, after contact between Kevin Magnussen and Carlos Sainz Jr. led to the elimination of the Toro Rosso driver and Williams Racing’s Felipe Massa. This along with earlier contact in turn 1 for Sebastian Vettel led a flurry of varying strategies, shuffling the field dramatically before halfway.
While Hamilton cruised up front, the battle was underway for third on back on the grid. The Scuderia Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen used a two-stop strategy to try to take advantage of better tires than their competitors around them. Meanwhile, the Force India team of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon used one-stop like most others, fighting for the podium. Drama would ensue between Perez and Ocon, with Perez not yielding to his faster teammate and costing them a chance to pass Daniel Ricciardo for third.
Other notable finishers on the day included Canada’s own Lance Stroll, who picked up points for the first time in his rookie campaign in ninth. Fernando Alonso, back for his first F1 race since his excursions with the Indy 500, was in position to pick up points for McLaren before his engine let go with under five laps to go.
