Sonoma Raceway is the first road course of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule, but also the transition point in the season. The best drivers in stock car racing go from competing against each other to racing against the clock as the playoffs tick ever closer with each lap. On Sunday in California’s wine country, Kevin Harvick secured his spot in the playoffs with a win in the Toyota / Save Mart 350.
Harvick, who took his first win of 2017 in his home state, swept the weekend at Sonoma after also winning the K&N Pro Series West race on Saturday afternoon. It was a Stewart-Haas Racing 1-2 finish with Clint Bowyer in 2nd, and Ford locked out the podium spots as Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski finished 3rd. The Toyota cars of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 5.
The race saw lots of bumping and banging throughout the field, with few if any cars coming out of the 11-turn road course without a scratch. The turn 11 hairpin was once again the calamity corner, where a number of race contenders including Dale Earnhardt Jr., A.J. Allmendinger and Danica Patrick were damaged. Martin Truex Jr., who led the most laps during the afternoon, dropped out of the race late with an engine failure.
