The racing world is a buzz after a Tweet stirs up some conversation about a four-car team downsizing for the 2018 season.

You shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet. Every lie has a little bit of truth. So which one is it? Well, much of the racing world won’t know until later this season, if at all.

A recent Tweet from @TheOrangeCone stirred up a lot of conversation on Twitter and on Reddit regarding a “powerhouse four-car team” reducing to just three cars for next season.

Could this be purely speculation? Sure. The Twitter account blends satire with informational posts. But to overlook the Tweet would be foolish. So it got us thinking, which teams could this apply to?

More from NASCAR

Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing are the three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams that come to mind immediately. All three are powerhouses and there are scenarios where each team could be cut to three cars in 2018.

Let’s also not forget about JR Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. JR Motorsports is the only Xfinity Series team that fields four full-time teams with the same drivers for the entire season. Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series fields five teams, four of them full-time, three of those with drivers running the entire season.

So which team could it be? Let’s take a look at each scenario.
