The Austrian Grand Prix for the Formula One world championship marked the first race after the dramatic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel infamously came together under the safety car. On Sunday in Spielberg, however, there was no drama or no big stories for the two title combatants, as Valtteri Bottas cruised away to victory from pole.
Bottas, who took his second career F1 win on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring and second of 2017 with the Mercedes AMG Petronas team. Sebastian Vettel came home in second, continuing to hold the championship lead. Daniel Ricciardo rounding out the podium with yet another third place finish.
The relatively incident-free race only saw drivers truly clash in the opening corner, as Daniil Kvyat crashed into Fernando Alonso, collecting Max Verstappen with them. This combined with the potential that Valtteri Bottas may have jumped the start led to a tense opening lap, but later resolved into a casual Sunday drive.
Lewis Hamilton, who may have been the favorite coming into the weekend to win the Grand Prix, struggled thanks to a poor qualifying effort and a five-spot grid penalty. Starting in 8th, he nearly passed Daniel Ricciardo near the finish to land on the podium, but instead had to settle for 4th.
