Lewis Hamilton continues to reset the Formula One history books, taking the pole for Sunday’s home race in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

More from Formula One

It is no secret that Lewis Hamilton loves racing on his home soil. Frequently racing up front at the Silverstone circuit, the Mercedes AMG Petronas team hopes that this year’s British Grand Prix can be a turning point in the Formula One world championship. And so far, Hamilton has done all he can to own the weekend, taking the pole for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who took the pole for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone by over half a second over teammate Valtteri Bottas, ties the great Jim Clark for the most poles in race history with five. He also now is one pole position shy of tying Michael Schumacher for the most all-time in Formula One history. The former world champion is absolutely the favorite heading into Sunday’s race, which could be impacted by wet weather.

Valtteri Bottas, who was one of the fastest in practice in Great Britain this weekend, qualified 4th but will start 9th on Sunday. He faces a five-spot grid penalty for a gearbox change on his #77 Mercedes ride. Meanwhile, Kimi Raikkonen ran to 2nd place for the start of Sunday’s Grand Prix, with his teammate and championship leader Sebastian Vettel in 3rd.

The qualifying session was not without its drama, with Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean accusing Hamilton of slowing down one of his fast laps in the Q3 session. Stewards would investigate the matter, but no penalty was announced. Grosjean, meanwhile, will start 10th as the only Haas driver to advance into the top 10.

The feel-good story of qualifying was McLaren, who performed valiantly in their de facto home race. Fernando Alonso briefly took the top spot on the grid in Q1, while young Stoffel Vandoorne advanced to Q3 and out-qualified Alonso for the first time in his career. In fact, it is the first time Alonso was out-qualified by his teammate since 2007.
