New Hampshire Motor Speedway may seem like a simple, low-banked mile oval, but if you’ve ever driven on the track, you know it is a whole different animal. On Saturday, the young guns and seasoned Cup veterans of the Xfinity Series took to the magic mile and battled each other (and Mother Nature) for the race win. At the end of the day, it was Kyle Busch back in victory lane yet again, earning his 89th career series win.
However, it was not a simple day for the driver of the #18 Toyota. He and the rest of the 40-car field had to contend with an hour-long rain delay in the middle of the first stage of the Overton’s 200. Then, Brad Keselowski proved to be the top combatant for Kyle Busch on Saturday, leading a race-high 102 laps. Ultimately, a pit road penalty would doom Brad K.’s day with 29 laps to go, when he left his pit stall with the fuel can still attached.
The much talked about PJ1 track surface enhancer became an afterthought after an earlier Whelen Modified Tour race combined with rain to clear away most of the sticky substance. What became the top storyline was another Xfinity Series race dominated by Cup Series regulars, with series regulars combining to only lead ten laps on the day.
Modified ace Ryan Preece earned his best career Xfinity Series finish with Joe Gibbs Racing in second, followed by William Byron in third. Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five.
