Sebastian Vettel expanded his points lead while leading a Scuderia Ferrari 1-2 on Sunday in the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix.

More from Formula One

The final race before the summer break for Formula One can mean more than most. It provides one team and one driver with the most momentum heading into the month off, before returning for the sprint to the championship. Sebastian Vettel made the most of his opportunity and took the win on Sunday in the Hungarian Grand Prix, but it was no easy ride.

Vettel, who started on pole following Ferrari’s lockout of the front row, came home ahead of his teammate Kimi Raikkonen despite struggling with the handling of his car. The championship leader complained early about problems with his steering, and those issues only grew as the race progressed. This led to the two Ferrari drivers not being able to escape the pursuit of the silver arrows of Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton, who was playing catch up still in the F1 title hunt, battled back from a fourth place starting spot to be a contender throughout, but still finished off the podium. It was a story of two different team orders, where Ferrari prioritized the slower Vettel over Raikkonen who could push the pace. On the other hand, Mercedes allowed both Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to battle freely for positions, with Bottas coming home in third and Hamilton fourth.

Perhaps the biggest incident of the day happened on the opening lap, and between teammates no less. Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo had a falling out in turn 3, as Verstappen locked up the tires and plowed into his senior teammate. Ricciardo was understandably none too pleased with the incident, which should make for tense times going forward at the team.

The biggest surprise of the race was turned in by McLaren, who saw their best finish of the season thus far with Fernando Alonso in sixth. His teammate Stoffel Vandoorne also earned points for the first time in his career by finishing in tenth. This would also be the first double points finish for the team in over a year.
