In the first road course race of the NASCAR Xfinity Series season, Kyle Busch spun and then won the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Road course racing has become a bit of an acquired taste for NASCAR fans in recent years. Many have clamored for more lefts and rights in stock car racing, and the Xfinity Series returns to road racing in 2017 at The Glen. The Zippo 200 was the first of three road course races in the month of August, and Kyle Busch drew first blood with his first Watkins Glen victory.

Busch, who up until Saturday had never won at The Glen in the Xfinity Series, was not the early favorite for victory after spinning out in turn one while leading. Then, another piece of adversity was handed his way as he was penalized on pit road, forcing him to the rear of the field. But Busch put on a masterful performance charging through the field to take the checkered flag.

The win for Busch was the first also for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series at Watkins Glen. It was also the organization’s 139th ever win in the series, breaking a tie at the top of the all-time wins list. The Team Penske duo of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski came home 2nd and 3rd. Controversially, Keselowski made comments post-race suggesting an unfair advantage for Toyota not only in the Xfinity Series, but in all three of NASCAR’s national touring levels.

The race was decidedly dominated by the Cup Series drivers who were moonlighting in the series. Premier series regulars made up seven out of the top 10 finishing positions, with Justin Allgaier the highest finishing Xfinity Series championship contender in 4th. Brad Keselowski and Paul Menard were the two stage winners on Saturday in upstate New York.
