2017 I Love New York 355 Race Results – Truex Jr. Stretches for Victory
By Alex Herbst
In a fairly tame road course race for the Monster Energy Cup Series, Martin Truex Jr. saved enough fuel to coast across the line to win at Watkins Glen.
The final road course race of the season for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series made for one of the final wild card events ahead of the series playoffs in September. On the winding turns of Watkins Glen, anyone can come out on top when turning left and right. At the end of the day on Sunday, Martin Truex Jr. stretched the fuel to score another win in 2017 with Furniture Row Racing.
Truex did what many could not on Sunday at The Glen, saving just enough fuel to come across the line in first. Beating out some of the strongest competition on the day in Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch, the #78 team earned their fourth win of the 2017 campaign, cementing their spot atop the Cup Series playoff grid.
Matt Kenseth, who desperately needed a win to lock himself into the playoffs, came home second at WGI. Rookie Daniel Suarez, Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top 5. Suarez surprised many by winning the second stage on Sunday, following in his teammate’s footsteps after Kyle Busch won the first stage.

The race was fairly tame for road course standards, with just one car falling out of the race due to a parts failure. Sadly for the fans, it was NASCAR’s most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. It would end up being his ninth finish of the season outside of the top 30 in 22 events.
