The qualifying session for the ABC Supply 500 set the starting grid for the 14th of 17 IndyCar races this season. Who will roll off where tomorrow?
Takuma Sato took the pole position for the 2017 ABC Supply 500 IndyCar race at the 2.5-mile triangle-shaped Pocono Raceway oval in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The pole is his second of the season, with his first coming back at the second Belle Isle race. It was the seventh pole of his career.
Sato, the final qualifier of the day, had to qualify right after a scary wreck took place during the qualifying run of his Andretti Autosport teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was taken to a local hospital with an injury to his left hip. He is, however, expected to race tomorrow in an attempt to win for the second time in three years at Pocono.
Sato bumped Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud off of the provisional pole with a two-lap average speed of 219.639 miles per hour, giving Honda drivers all three poles in superspeedway races this season. Chevrolet drivers, however, still have the upper hand overall with nine of the 14 poles this season.
Of the top 13 drivers in qualifying, 10 of them were Honda drivers, with Sato leading the charge. Pagenaud was the fastest Chevrolet driver in 2nd place followed by his Team Penske teammate Will Power in 5th. The only non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver in the top 13 was Gabby Chaves, who qualified in 8th place driving for Harding Racing in just his third race of the season.
