Lewis Hamilton continues to rewrite Formula One history, tying Michael Schumacher’s record on Saturday for the most poles of all-time.
Following the summer break for the Formula One world championship, the top drivers in the world return to tackle the tough twists and turns of Circuit Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Many felt heading into the weekend that it would be a continued battle between Ferrari and Mercedes. On Saturday, the silver arrows struck first blood, with Lewis Hamilton capturing the pole position.
Hamilton, who has already rewritten many records in F1, has toppled yet another mark in qualifying. With his 68th career pole, the British driver ties the great Michael Schumacher for the most poles in Formula One history. It would surprise no one to see Hamilton eclipse Schumacher’s mark before the end of 2017.
Following Lewis Hamilton in qualifying was his championship nemesis Sebastian Vettel in 2nd. Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen will start on row two. Hamilton out-qualified Vettel on Saturday by about one-quarter of a second and his teammate Bottas by close to half a second.
