NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife of almost two years, Amy, are expecting their first child — a baby girl.

Nearly six months after announcing that he would retire following the conclusion of the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series season, two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced that he and his wife Amy are expecting their first child, a baby girl. Dale, 43, and Amy, 35, got married on December 31st, 2015.

As most everyone knows, Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost his father Dale Earnhardt Sr., a seven-time NASCAR champion, when Earnhardt Sr. crashed on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

With just five races to go in this season until Earnhardt Jr. officially retires, his decision to wait until the end of his Cup Series career to start a family looks to be a smart one, especially since he is set to join the NBC Sports Network broadcasting booth for NASCAR races next season and even a part-time return to the Cup Series in 2018 is extremely unlikely if not already completely out of the question.

Here is what Earnhardt Jr. had to say about the exciting news.

More from Dale Earnhardt Jr

"“I’m excited to start a family, and I hope I’m fortunate enough to do that with Amy. We definitely want to do that. And it would be weird not being a race car driver if I have a daughter or son, I think about that, would they understand what I’m telling them or what I did for a long time. I’m hoping to find out all that stuff soon.’’"

Here is how the 14-time defending NASCAR Most Popular Driver Award winner broke the news to the world.

With five races to go this season, will Dale Earnhardt Jr. be able to get to Victory Lane one last time for the first time since July of 2015 before he officially retires, becomes a race broadcaster and starts a family? The next Cup Series race will be held at Kansas Speedway this Sunday, October 22nd and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network starting at 3:00 PM ET.
