Once again, grid penalties will change the starting grid of a Formula One race. Here’s how they will affect the grid of the United States Grand Prix.
The United States Grand Prix, which is the 17th race of the 20-race 2017 Formula One season is set to take place today at 3:00 PM ET at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Qualifying for the race was held yesterday, but the starting grid will not be completely based on qualifying results, as several grid penalties were issued to drivers.
It was Lewis Hamilton taking his 11th pole of the season and the 72nd of his career. None of the drivers who qualified in the top 5 received grid penalties, but Max Verstappen, who qualified in 6th place, was the first of six drivers in the field who did.
Verstappen incurred a 15-place grid penalty for exceeding his engine allowance, although he will only drop 10 places on the grid. Stoffel Vandoorne, who qualified 13th, incurred a 30-place grid penalty for an engine change but will only lose seven spots on the grid and will start in last (20th).

Nico Hulkenberg, who qualified 15th, incurred a 20-place grid penalty for an engine change but will only lose three spots on the grid. Brendon Hartley, who qualified 18th in his Formula One debut, incurred a 25-place grid penalty for the same reason but will only lose one spot on the grid.
Lance Stroll and Kevin Magnussen both incurred three-place grid penalties for impeding the progress of Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez, respectively, during qualifying. However, because of the penalties to the other drivers, Stroll will actually move up two spot on the grid while Magnussen will move up three.
