Denny Hamlin has been the focus of NASCAR this week after wrecking race leader Chase Elliott at Martinsville. Will Hamlin be wrecked at Texas this Sunday?

With just over two laps to go in last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Round of 8 playoff race at Martinsville Speedway, Chase Elliott appeared to be just over one mile away from claiming his first career victory in the series.

However, Denny Hamlin, who was running in 2nd place at the time, had other plans. Those plans involved wrecking Elliott and ruining his chances at winning his first career Cup Series race at Martinsville and clinching himself a spot in the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to close out the 2017 season.

Here is a video of that wreck.

Hamlin ended up being involved in a wreck following the next restart, causing him to finish in 7th place, so he, like Elliott, was unable to punch his ticket into the Championship 4. In fact, Elliott is the only Round of 8 playoff driver who Hamlin is ahead of in the standings. Hamlin sits 8 points below the Championship 4 cut line, with Elliott sitting another 18 points behind him.

Will Hamlin be the victim of an intentional wreck this weekend at Texas as payback, even if Elliott isn’t the aggressor?

Denny Hamlin getting wrecked at Texas: BUY

There are two types of people when it comes to the wreck between Hamlin and Elliott last weekend. There are those who wish to see Hamlin pay for the wreck just because of the fact that he wrecked Elliott, and there are those who are excited that there is drama in NASCAR and perhaps a brewing rivalry. And a rivalry would not be a rivalry if only one driver got his or her way every week.

Both sets of people would not mind seeing Hamlin in the wall this weekend, and it’s not crazy to think it won’t happen, even if Elliott isn’t the one who wrecks him; after all, Elliott is fighting for his own playoff life at this point, so it’s hard to see him risking that just to put Hamlin into the wall, especially since Hamlin himself is below the Championship 4 cut line.

When you wreck somebody in NASCAR, it’s not a matter of if you’ll pay for it. It’s a matter of when. Maybe that hasn’t been the case recently as much as it has been in the past, but given the fallout from the Hamlin and Elliott wreck last weekend as well as the fact that Elliott appears poised to take over the title as NASCAR’s most popular driver once Dale Earnhardt Jr. retires, it’s pretty safe to say that you can expect the whole “what goes around, comes around” concept to be the case once again.

And with there being just three races remaining this season, it’s safe to say that it will happen sooner rather than later.
