NASCAR: Can-Am Duel #1 at Daytona results – Ryan Blaney wins
By Asher Fair
In a NASCAR Cup Series race dominated by his teammate Joey Logano, it was Ryan Blaney winning the first Can-Am Duel at Daytona.
Ryan Blaney, 24, took the checkered flag in front of the rest of the 20-car NASCAR Cup Series field in the first of two Can-Am Duel races at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida that will set the 3rd through 40th starting positions in this Sunday’s Daytona 500.
Blaney, the driver of the #12 Ford for Team Penske, was not the team’s top driver throughout the night. That honor went to his teammate Joey Logano, the driver of the #22 Ford who led 56 of the race’s 63 laps.
Blaney led just six of the race’s 63 laps en route to winning the race. Team Penske’s other driver, Brad Keselowski, was up front for much of the race in his #2 Ford, but he ultimately ended up wrecking late in the race without ever having led a lap.

The 63-lap race around the 2.5-mile tri-oval featured just four lead changes among three leaders, which makes sense given the dominance of Joey Logano up until Blaney took the lead from him with only a handful of laps remaining. The only other driver to lead a lap was Rick Ware Racing’s Justin Marks, who led just one lap.
The race featured a total of four caution flag periods. The first caution flag of the race came out on lap 9 when Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson spun out and hit Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almriola. The second caution flag of the race came out on lap 39 when Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron spun out.
The third caution flag of the race came out on lap 48 when RBR Enterprises’ David Gilliland spun out and hit the wall. The fourth and final caution flag of the race came out on lap 58 to send the race into overtime, as Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray made contact with Brad Keselowski, sending Keselowski into the wall.
