The first of six oval races in the 2018 IndyCar season is complete. Which teams rank where in the first edition of team oval power rankings?
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden won the first oval race of the 2018 IndyCar season and the first oval race of the new universal aero kit era in his #2 Chevrolet. He did so by winning the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Arizona.
Newgarden winning the 250-lap race around the four-turn, 1.022-mile dogleg oval delivered Team Penske their first win of the season, and it made them one for one in oval races after closing out the 2017 season by winning the final four oval races.
As a result of their win in the race at Phoenix, Team Penske open up the oval portion of the 2018 IndyCar season schedule on top of the team oval power rankings by the nature of the formula that calculates these rankings.

However, Team Penske were the only Chevrolet team that had a great amount of success in the race at Phoenix, as Newgarden was the only Chevrolet driver who finished the race in the top 6.
Several Honda teams had success in the race at Phoenix. In fact, three Honda teams were represented by the five drivers who finished the race from 2nd to 6th place ahead of the second highest finishing Chevrolet driver, who was Ed Carpenter of Ed Carpenter Racing. Carpenter is the lone driver in the series who is set to drive in every single one of the oval races in the 2018 season but none of the road or street course races.
Note that each and every statistic referenced in these rankings takes into account oval races only. Road and street course races are not factored into these rankings whatsoever. As a result of the fact that only one oval race has been contested so far this season, the race at Phoenix, only statistics from that race are included in these rankings.
Without further ado, here is the first edition of the formulated IndyCar Team Oval Power Rankings in the 2018 season in addition to the first edition of the non-formulated IndyCar Team Oval Power Rankings in the 2018 season.
