NASCAR Cup Series: Ford Mustang planned for 2019 season
By Asher Fair
The Ford Mustang is set to be used by Ford teams in the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season as Ford’s fourth Cup Series model since the 1972 season began.
In the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series season, Toyota teams used a redesigned 2018 Camry model in competition after updating their original 2013 Camry from the 2013 season, the first season during which Generation 6 cars were used, to match the updated 2015 Camry in the 2015 season.
Then ahead of the 2018 season, Chevrolet teams switched to the new 2018 Camaro ZL1 model after five seasons of running the Super Sport (SS) model since the start of the 2013 season with no major updates from 2013 to 2017.
This left Ford with the oldest car model of the three Cup Series manufacturers, as they still use the second generation Fusion and have used it since the start of the 2013 season when the Generation 6 cars were introduced.
However, that is set to change in the 2019 Cup Series season if everything happens as planned. As of now, Ford plan to introduce the Mustang to the series next year.

The Mustang has been used by Ford in the Xfinity Series since the 2011 season, but it has not been used in the Cup Series. Prior to Ford’s current Cup Series model, the Fusion, they also used the Ford Thunderbird and the Ford Taurus i since the beginning of the “modern era” in the 1972 Cup Series season.
Of the 16 Cup Series teams with at least one full-time driver, six of them are Ford teams. Those six teams are Stewart-Haas Racing, Team Penske, Wood Brothers Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, Front Row Motorsports and Go Fas Racing.
Here is what Mark Rushbrook, the Ford Performance Global Director, had to say about the provisional usage of the Ford Mustang in the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, according to NASCAR.com.
"“NASCAR has a really good process that continues to get better every year. It’s a very well-defined process for timing. The submission will happen through June of this year, and then depending on how things go on that initial test, that will lay out the rest of our timeline.“We’re obviously very excited. It’s something we’ve been working on for some time. There’s been a lot of speculation about it, and we’re happy we can put that to rest.“We tried to leverage the skill across all of our teams. We’ve had active engagements from Roush Fenway Racing, Team Penske and Stewart-Haas Racing. They’ve been the main contributors to this, but (all of the teams) are anxious to get the best car on the track in 2019, so they’ve been very active with us.”"
