Josef Newgarden dominated both days of the suspended Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the fourth race of the 2018 IndyCar season.
For the second time in the last three IndyCar races, Josef Newgarden drove to victory lane in his #1 Chevrolet for Team Penske in front of a pack of Honda drivers.
He did so by winning for the third time in the last four seasons at the 17-turn, 2.38-mile Barber Motorsports Park natural terrain road course in Birmingham, Alabama in the 2018 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the fourth race of the 2018 IndyCar season.
The race ended up lasting 82 laps as opposed to its originally scheduled 90 laps as a result of the fact that it became a two-hour timed race yesterday thanks to the wet conditions, which ultimately caused the start time of the race to be moved up yesterday before the race was suspended until today after just 23 laps.
Newgarden, who is the only driver with more than one win through four races so far this season as a result of his win today, won the race by 9.9607 seconds over 2nd place finisher Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was the first driver in a line of seven consecutive Honda drivers from 2nd all the way down to 8th in his #28 Honda for Andretti Autosport.
Hunter-Reay’s 2nd place finish is tied for his best result since his most recent IndyCar victory came back in the 2015 season at Pocono Raceway.
The next highest finishing Chevrolet driver was Newgarden’s teammate Simon Pagenaud, who finished in 9th place. The highest finishing non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver was A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Matheus Leist, the rookie who finished in a career-high 12th.
The race featured only four lead changes among two different drivers, Newgarden and Bourdais. Newgarden led 73 of the race’s 82 laps, while Bourdais led the other nine. Bourdais only led after Newgarden pitted, both during his first pit stop and his race-winning pit stop to become the first driver to go on wet tires as the rain started falling late in the race.

The only caution flag periods during the race took place yesterday. The first caution flag period of the race took place on lap 1 to start the race clock in the wet conditions. The second caution flag period of the race took place on lap 12 when Charlie Kimball spun out and hit the wall coming off of turn 16 before he ultimately came to a stop in turn six.
The third and final caution flag period of the race took place on lap 17 as a result of Will Power spinning and crashing in turn one on a restart. The wet conditions that caused Power’s wreck led to a 37-minute red flag period before the race went back under caution for a few laps.
The race then came to a halt again without going green for the second red flag period, when it was ultimately announced that the race would be suspended until today.
