Formula 1: Toto Wolff discusses signing Lewis Hamilton to new contract
By Asher Fair
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport executive director Toto Wolff revealed that the team do want to sign four-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton to a new contract.
Four-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has not yet signed a contract to remain with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, the team for which he has won three of his four carer Formula 1 championships, beyond the end of the 2018 Formula 1 season.
However, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsports executive director Toto Wolff has stated that this has nothing to do with anything aside of the fact that both the team and Hamilton have had busy schedules and have simply not had to time
Here is what Wolff had to say about the matter, according to ESPN.
"“We haven’t talked now for a few days or few weeks because it was so intense in getting our act together with the team and all our priority has been concentrated on that, and this is what we do. We are very well aligned in what we expect from each other in the future and it’s just finding the time to sit down.”"
Hamilton’s current contract, which he signed in May of 2015, expires at the end of this season. However, at 33 years old, he is still performing at a very high level, and Mercedes would have no reason not to sign him.

Hamilton is the defending Formula 1 champion, and he has won three of the last four Formula 1 championships. He has the most pole positions in Formula 1 history with 73, and his career Formula 1 win total of 63 is second on the all-time wins list behind only the win total of the great Michael Schumacher, which is 91.
His win total of 40 from the 2014 season to the 2017 season is the largest win total over any four-year span in Formula 1 history. He won at least 10 races in the 2014 season, the 2015 season and the 2016 season, making him the only driver in Formula 1 history who has won at least 10 races in consecutive seasons.
Despite the fact that he has not had a spectacular start to the 2018 Formula 1 season, Hamilton has not finished lower than fourth place through the first four races of the season. He has one win in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and an average finish of 2.5, and he is the leader of the championship standings.
