IndyCar: Will Power tops second Indianapolis practice session

Will Power topped the second practice session for the fifth race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the IndyCar Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Team Penske’s Will Power topped the second practice session for the fifth race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the IndyCar Grand Prix, with a top lap time of 69.8759 seconds (125.657 miles per hour) in his #12 Team Penske Chevrolet around the 13-turn, 2.439-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in Speedway, Indiana.

Power also topped the first practice session for the race earlier today. Ed Carpenter Racing rookie Jordan King, who finished the earlier session in third place, finished the session in second in his #20 Chevrolet, giving Chevrolet drivers a 1-2 sweep of the session.

The top Honda driver in the session was Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in third place in his #27 Honda. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Robert Wickens was the second Honda driver in the top four in fourth place in his #6 Honda.

Chevrolet drivers took seven of the top 10 positions in the session in what was arguably their top practice session so far this season. The only other Honda driver who finished in the top 10 was Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais in seventh in his #18 Honda.

Team Penske’s other three drivers all finished in the top 10, with Simon Pagenaud, Helio Castroneves and championship leader Josef Newgarden finishing in fifth, sixth and tenth place in their #3 Chevrolet, #22 Chevrolet and #1 Chevrolet, respectively.

Qualifying for the IndyCar Grand Prix is scheduled to take place later this afternoon from 4:30 p.m. ET to 5:45 p.m. ET. The final warm-up session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 11:15 a.m. ET to 11:45 a.m. ET prior to the 85-lap race itself, which is scheduled to begin at 3:43 p.m. ET tomorrow after ABC’s live broadcast of it gets underway at 3:30 p.m. ET.
