Lewis Hamilton dominated the Emirates Spanish Grand Prix en route to his second overall victory and second consecutive victory in the 2018 Formula 1 season.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton dominated the Emirates Spanish Grand Prix at the 16-turn, 2.892-mile (4.655-kilometer) Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, Barcelona, Spain en route to his second overall victory and second consecutive victory in the 2018 Formula 1 season.
Hamilton became the second driver to win two races through five races this season, as he joined Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who won the first two races of the season, in that category. He did so by leading 58 of the race’s 66 laps and holding off his teammate Valtteri Bottas in second place by 20.593 seconds.
After starting from the pole position, Hamilton really did not have any challengers for the race victory, which helped him to extend his lead in the driver standings over Vettel in second place.

The race featured only two lead changes among two drivers, with both of those lead changes taking place as a result of pit strategy. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who finished in third place for his first podium finish of the season, led the eight laps of the race that Hamilton did not lead since he stayed out longer before making his first and only pit stop. Just five drivers finished the race on the lead lap.
The race featured one safety car period from lap one to lap six of the race for an accident involving Romain Grosjean, Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly in turn three.
It was pretty much smooth sailing throughout the rest of the race for much of the field, although Kimi Raikkonen, Esteban Ocon and Stoffel Vandoorne were all forced to retire with mechanical issues later in the race.
