Indy 500: Helio Castroneves tops second practice session

Helio Castroneves topped the speed chart in the second practice session for the 102nd running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves topped the speed chart in the second practice session for the sixth race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 at the four-turn, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana.

Castroneves, a three-time winner of the race, did so by recording a lap at 224.665 miles per hour (40.0597 seconds) around the track. He led a top two Chevrolet sweep of the speed chart, as Ed Carpenter Racing’s Ed Carpenter finished the session in second place in his #20 Chevrolet.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Jay Howard was the fastest Honda driver in third place in the practice session in his #7 Honda. Honda drivers Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing and Marco Andretti of Andretti Herta Autosport finished behind in in fourth and fifth in their #9 Honda and #98 Honda, respectively.

Simon Pagenaud, who topped the first Indy 500 practice session earlier today, was the second fastest Team Penske driver of the session down in 14th place in his #22 Chevrolet after Team Penske swept the top three positions in the first session.

The team’s other two drivers, Will Power and Josef Newgarden, finished in 21st and 26th place in the second session in their #12 Chevrolet and #1 Chevrolet, respectively.

Of the race’s 35 entrants, only A.J. Foyt Enterprises rookie Matheus Leist did not turn a lap in the practice session in his #4 Chevrolet. Overall, the Chevrolet drivers and the Honda drivers were pretty evenly split throughout the speed chart in the session.
