Marco Andretti topped the speed chart in the fifth practice session for the 102nd running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti topped the speed chart in the Fast Friday practice session, the fifth practice session, for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 at the four-turn, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, netting him a $10,000 award from the Harding Group. All 35 IndyCar drivers entered in this year’s Indy 500 completed several flying laps in this session.
Andretti topped the speed chart in his #98 Honda by recording the fastest lap of the week so far around the track at 231.802 miles per hour (38.8262 seconds). He also had the fastest lap of the week coming into today’s session with a lap at 227.053 miles per hour (39.5383 seconds) in Wednesday’s practice session.
Right behind Andretti on the speed chart was Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Robert Wickens in his #6 Honda, giving Honda a 1-2 sweep of the speed chart. The fastest Chevrolet driver in the session was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Ed Carpenter in third place in his #20 Chevrolet.

Three Honda drivers ended up finishing the session in the top four in the session, four Honda drivers ended up finishing in the top six, and six Honda drivers ended up finishing in the top 10.
The no tow speed chart, however, favored the Chevrolet drivers. Team Penske’s Will Power recorded the fastest no tow lap in the session at 229.780 miles per hour (39.1679 seconds) in his #12 Chevrolet. His teammates Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud finished in second and third place in their #1 Chevrolet and #22 Chevrolet, respectively, on the no tow speed chart, giving Team Penske a 1-2-3 sweep, and Ed Carpenter finished in fourth, giving Chevrolet a 1-2-3-4 sweep. Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais was the highest finishing Honda driver on the no tow speed chart in the session in fifth.
