By Asher Fair
Marco Andretti qualified on pole for the first race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit, the seventh race of the 2018 IndyCar season.
For the first time since the 2013 IndyCar season, Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti is set to start an IndyCar race from the pole position after he claimed the pole in qualifying for the seventh race of the 2018 IndyCar season, which is the first race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit.
Andretti, who now has five career poles and had not taken a pole position since he did so for the 2013 race at Pocono Raceway, recorded a lap at 74.8514 seconds (113.024 miles per hour) around the 14-turn, 2.35-mile temporary street circuit on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. This pole is his first career pole for a road or street course race.
That lap was nearly a full half-second faster than any other lap recorded by any other driver in qualifying and throughout the entire weekend thus far.
