Scott Dixon held off Ryan Hunter-Reay in the first race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit to claim his first victory of the 2018 IndyCar season.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon won for the first time in the 2018 IndyCar season in his #9 Honda, and in doing so, he claimed the 42nd victory of his IndyCar career. He held off Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay by 1.8249 seconds in second place in his #28 Honda in the first race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit.

Dixon, who became the fifth different winner through seven races so far this season by winning the race, led 39 of the race’s 70 laps around the 14-turn, 2.35-mile temporary street circuit on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan en route to taking the checkered flag in front of the rest of the field.

This victory moves Dixon into a tie for third place on the all-time IndyCar wins list with Michael Andretti. Dixon now trails only A.J. Foyt (67 wins) and Mario Andretti (52 wins) on the all-time wins list, and he will attempt to move into third all by himself in the second race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit tomorrow.

Dixon led a top six Honda sweep of the finishing order. As stated above, Hunter-Reay finished behind him in second place. Behind Hunter-Reay were Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi, Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ed Jones in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #27 Honda, #98 Honda, #30 Honda and #10 Honda, respectively.

The highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the race was Team Penske’s Will Power in his #12 Chevrolet. Power finished the race in seventh place and was one of only three Chevrolet drivers who finished in the top 13.

The race featured a total of six lead changes among four drivers. Aside of Dixon, three drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Hunter-Reay, Graham Rahal and race polesitter Marco Andretti.

The race also featured two caution flag periods for 10 laps. The first caution flag period of the race began on lap 46 when Graham Rahal, who swept both races of last season’s Chevrolet Dual in Detroit and had a great chance to finish on the podium in today’s race, hit the wall in turn 13, and the second and final caution flag period of the race began on lap 56 when Charlie Kimball spun out rookie Santino Ferrucci and sent him into the tire barrier in turn 7.

Of the 23 drivers who competed in today’s race, 21 finished it. Of the 21 drivers who finished the race, 20 did so on the lead lap, as Rene Binder finished three laps down after lacking pace early on and then spinning out in turn 7. The same 23 drivers are set to return to the track tomorrow for the second race of the 2018 Chevrolet Dual in Detroit.
