Formula 1: Renault aiming to make Red Bull Racing regret 2019 engine decision
By Asher Fair
Renault are aiming to make Red Bull Racing regret their decision to switch to Honda engines in the 2019 Formula 1 season.
It was confirmed yesterday that Red Bull Racing will be ending their 12-year partnership with Renault following the conclusion of the 2018 Formula 1 season and that the team will use Honda engines as opposed to Renault engines in the 2019 season.
Red Bull Racing arrived in Formula 1 in the 2005 season, and they have used Renault engines in 12 of their 14 seasons in the sport. They only did not use Renault engines in the 2005 season and the 2006 season. They used Cosworth engines and Ferrari engines in those two seasons, respectively.
Cyril Abiteboul, the managing director of Renault Sport, the factory Renault Formula 1 team, has stated that Renault are now aiming to make Red Bull Racing regret their switch from Renault engines to Honda engines in the 2019 season.
Here is what Abiteboul had to say about the matter, according to Motorsport.com.
"“We will do everything we can to make them regret this decision. What I mean by that is simply doing the best we can on track with our own team under our own colours. I am really extremely excited by the performance improvement to come, in particular with Spec C which we will introduce later this season.“At this point in time there is no reason to think that Red Bull will not be receiving it, although we are yet to confirm details of engine allocation plan, but I hope that we will make them regret.”"
Red Bull Racing’s deal with Honda is a two-year deal, so they are set to use Honda engines for the first time in the 2019 season, and they are set to do so again in the 2020 season before another decision is made about the route that they will take in the future in regard to their choice of engine manufacturer.

The team have already signed Max Verstappen to a contract that runs through the 2020 season, so Verstappen is set to drive a Honda-powered car for them for at least the next two seasons. But Verstappen is one of only two active Formula 1 drivers along with Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who have signed contracts to remain with their current teams beyond the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Red Bull Racing’s other driver, Daniel Ricciardo, is one of the 18 active Formula 1 drivers who do not have a contract beyond the conclusion of the 2018 season. Depending on which team he signs with in the 2019 season, he may not end up driving a Honda-powered car for the team.
As a result, the driver lineup that will be used by Red Bull Racing to try to make Renault fail to make them regret their decision to switch from Renault engines to Honda engines is not yet known.
