IndyCar: Zach Veach tops first 2018 ABC Supply 500 practice session

Zach Veach topped the speed chart in the first practice session for the 14th race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the ABC Supply 500, at Pocono Raceway.
Andretti Autosport rookie Zach Veach topped the speed chart in the first of two practice sessions for the 14th race of the 17-race 2018 IndyCar season, the ABC Supply 500, at Pocono Raceway.
The 23-year-old Stockdale, Ohio native had never previously topped the speed chart in a practice session in his IndyCar career.
Veach topped the speed chart in the first practice session for the 200-lap race by recording a top lap speed of 217.393 miles per hour (41.3997 seconds) around the three-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Pocono Raceway triangle in Long Pond, Pennsylvania in his #26 Honda.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver in the practice session. He finished in second place in his #1 Chevrolet, and he was the only Chevrolet driver who finished in the top five.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi, Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon rounded out the top five in third, fourth and fifth place in their #27 Honda, #18 Honda and #9 Honda, respectively.
A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Tony Kanaan was the highest finishing non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver of the practice session. He finished in sixth place in his #14 Chevrolet. Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud and Will Power were the next two highest finishing Chevrolet drivers in of the session. Pagenaud finished in seventh in his #22 Chevrolet and Power finished in 11th in his #12 Chevrolet.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammates Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe rounded out the top 10 in eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #30 Honda, #15 Honda and #5 Honda, respectively.
The second and final practice session for the ABC Supply 500 is scheduled to take place this afternoon after qualifying. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.
The second practice session for the race is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, the IndyCar mobile app, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The race itself is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.
