IndyCar: Alexander Rossi tops first 2018 Gateway practice session

Alexander Rossi topped the first practice session for the 15th race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, at Gateway Motorsports Park.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi topped the speed chart in the opening practice session for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, which is the 15th race of the 17-race 2018 IndyCar season, at Gateway Motorsports Park.

This practice session was initially scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. ET, but it ended up being delayed by a few hours and did not start until around 4:30 p.m. ET as a result of rain.

Rossi topped the speed chart in this practice session by recording a top lap speed of 184.424 miles per hour (24.4003 seconds) around the four-turn, 1.25-mile (2.012-kilometer) Gateway Motorsports Park oval in Madison, Illinois in his #27 Honda.

Rossi led a top three Honda sweep of the speed chart in this practice session. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top three in second and third place in their #9 Honda and #18 Honda, respectively.

A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ Tony Kanaan was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the practice session. He finished in fourth place in his #14 Chevrolet. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ed Jones rounded out the top five in fifth in his #10 Honda.

Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Zach Veach finished in sixth and eighth place in their #28 Honda and #26 Honda, respectively. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot finished in seventh in his #21 Chevrolet and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe finished in ninth in his #5 Honda.

The highest finishing Team Penske driver in this practice session was Josef Newgarden, who finished in 10th place in his #1 Chevrolet. Team Penske’s other two drivers, Will Power and Simon Pagenaud, finished in 11th and 12th in their #12 Chevrolet and #22 Chevrolet, respectively.

The qualifying session for the race is tentatively scheduled to start this evening at 6:30 p.m. ET, and the final practice session for the race is scheduled to start this evening at 9:00 p.m. ET.  The qualifying session is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network while the practice session is set to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, the IndyCar mobile app, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The race itself is scheduled to begin tomorrow night at 8:35 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network starting at 8:00 p.m. ET..
