IndyCar: Will Power tops first Portland open test

Team Penske’s Will Power topped the speed chart in the first IndyCar open test at Portland International Raceway ahead of this Sunday’s Grand Prix of Portland.

Team Penske’s Will Power topped the speed chart in the first open test ahead of the race weekend at Portland International Raceway, which is set to host the penultimate race of the 17-race 2018 IndyCar season on Sunday, September 2.

Power recorded a top lap time of 58.9540 seconds (120.114 miles per hour) around the 12-turn, 1.967-mile (3.166-kilometer) Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon in his #12 Chevrolet.

Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti was the highest finishing Honda driver in the test session. He finished in second place in his #98 Honda. Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi rounded out the top three in third in his #27 Honda.

Chevrolet drivers Jordan King and Josef Newgarden of Ed Carpenter Racing and Team Penske rounded out the test session in the top five in fourth and fifth place in their #20 Chevrolet and #1 Chevrolet, respectively.

Only one other Chevrolet driver finished the test session in the top 12, as Honda drivers took each of the four positions from sixth through ninth place as well as both 11th and 12th. That Chevrolet driver was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot, who finished in 10th in his #21 Chevrolet.

Andretti Autosport teammates Zach Veach and Ryan Hunter-Reay finished the test session in sixth and eighth place in their #26 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively, while Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato finished in seven and ninth in their #9 Honda and #30 Honda, respectively.

Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe finished the test session in 11th and 12th place in their #18 Honda and #5 Honda, respectively.

The first official practice session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:45 p.m. ET. The second practice session is scheduled to take place tomorrow evening starting at 5:35 p.m. ET, and the third and final practice session is scheduled to take place on Saturday starting at 2:10 p.m. ET. All three practice sessions are set to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, the IndyCar mobile app, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Qualifications for the race are scheduled to begin on Saturday evening at 6:20 p.m. ET, and they are set to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, the IndyCar mobile app, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. NBC Sports Network is set to re-air qualifications at 7:30 p.m. ET. The race itself is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET.
