IndyCar: Josef Newgarden tops second 2018 Sonoma practice session

Josef Newgarden topped the speed chart in the second practice session for the 2018 IndyCar season finale, the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden topped the speed chart in the second of three practice sessions for the 17th and final race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Newgarden topped the speed chart in this practice session by recording a top lap time of 77.8156 seconds (110.338 miles per hour) around the 12-turn, 2.385-mile (3.838-kilometer) Sonoma Raceway road course in Sonoma, California in his #2 Chevrolet.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, the four-time IndyCar champion who currently possesses a 29-point lead in the championship standings over Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in second place, was the highest finishing Honda driver of the practice session. He finished in second in his #9 Honda.

Harding Racing rookie Patricio O’Ward finished the practice session in third place in his #8 Chevrolet. Team Penske’s Will Power finished in fourth in his #12 Chevrolet. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe rounded out the top five in fifth place in his #5 Honda.

Honda drivers took the remaining six positions in the top 11 on the speed chart in this practice session as well. Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi, Ryan Hunter-Reay, who topped the speed chart in the opening practice session for the race, and Zach Veach finished in sixth, 10th and 11th place in their #27 Honda, #28 Honda and #26 Honda, respectively.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ed Jones finished the practice session in seventh place in his #10 Honda. Dale Coyne Racing rookies Santino Ferrucci and Pietro Fittipaldi finished in eighth and ninth in their #39 Honda and #19 Honda, respectively.

The third and final practice session for the race is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET tomorrow afternoon. This session is set to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, the IndyCar mobile app, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Qualifications for the race are set to be broadcast live on all of these platforms as well beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET tomorrow evening. NBC Sports Network is set to re-air qualifications tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The race itself is scheduled to get underway at 6:40 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 16. It is scheduled to be an 85-lap race. NBC Sports Network is set to broadcast the race live beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET.
