Formula 1: Daniel Ricciardo takes pole for 2018 Mexican Grand Prix
By Asher Fair
With a lap record, Daniel Ricciardo took the pole position for the 19th race of the 2018 Formula 1 season, the Mexican Grand Prix.
For the first time in his Formula 1 career, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo is set to start a race other than the Monaco Grand Prix from the pole position, as he took the pole position for the 19th race of the 21-race 2018 season, the Mexican Grand Prix.
This pole position is the third of his Formula 1 career and his second of the season. Aside of his pole position in this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, which propelled him to lead every one of the race’s 78 laps, his only other past pole position is his pole position in the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix.
The 29-year-old Australian took the pole position for the 71-lap race around the 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.304-kilometer) Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico by recording a top lap time of 74.759 seconds (128.766 miles per hour) in the third and final qualifying session for the race. This lap is a new lap record around this track.

Ricciardo’s teammate Max Verstappen was on the provisional pole before Ricciardo recorded this lap shortly after the clock hit 0:00 in the third and final qualifying session for the race. The 21-year-old Dutchman ended up qualifying in second place just 0.026 seconds behind Ricciardo, giving Red Bull Racing a front row lockout for the first time of the V6 turbo hybrid era.
The most recent race that featured two Red Bull Racing teammates starting on the front row of the grid is the 2013 United States Grand Prix, but that is set to change tomorrow. In this race, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber started in first and second place, respectively.
Championship contenders Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and Sebastian Vettel of Scuderia Ferrari qualified in third and fourth place, respectively, for the race. Their respective teammates, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen, qualified in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Renault Sport teammates Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz were the “best of the rest”, as they locked out the fourth row by qualifying in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Alfa Romeo Sauber teammates Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top 10 by locking out the fifth row, as they qualifying in ninth and 10th, respectively.
