NASCAR: Does Joey Logano have a prayer at winning the championship?
By Dustin Smith
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will wrap up its 2018 season on Sunday and crown a new champion. Is there any chance that will be Joey Logano?
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will crown a champion this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Four drivers are eligible to take home the hardware. Of those four drivers, the one who sticks out to me as the most likely not to win is Joey Logano. This has nothing to do with the talent Logano possesses, but more the general fact that nobody in the garage area wants him to be the champion of the series.
Logano has made it very clear for years that he isn’t in the Cup Series to make friends. There have been several occurrences where he has ruffled the feathers of fellow drivers, sometimes coming with a few dust-ups on pit road following races.
More recently, Logano came under fire from Martin Truex Jr. for hitting him on the final lap of the round of 8 race at Martinsville Speedway. The following week at Texas Motor Speedway, Logano took space away from Aric Almirola.
When it’s all said and done, is there any way that we will see Joey Logano win the Cup Series championship this weekend? I, for one, say no and have plenty of ammunition to back up that theory.
Let’s take a look at the three most likely scenarios to end Joey Logano’s championship dreams this weekend.
Joey Logano’s championship dreams will be ended via…
He gets “Kensethed” again
Who could possibly forget when Joey Logano was leading at Martinsville Speedway and Matt Kenseth took him out while several laps behind?
The crowd in the background went insane when Kenseth spun Logano. I remember being at home and just mesmerized by what had happened. Logano has upset so many people over the years that something like this happening again is certainly possible.
It could be Aric Almirola, whose championship dreams were ended this past weekend, or maybe, just maybe, Matt Kenseth, who is on the entry list for this weekend and still has a bitter taste in his mouth from 2015 and could take matters into his own hands.

History with Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch
One of the best quotes the NASCAR Cup Series has ever had in its history was in the interview with Joey Logano after he was spun by Kevin Harvick at Pocono Raceway back in 2010. Logano made the comment that “his wife wears the fire suit in the family and tells him what to do, so it’s probably not his fault”, which caught quite some attention.
There is also some history for Logano with Kyle Busch. After the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2017, Kyle Busch went after Logano on pit road.
Drivers such as Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick don’t forget things like this. Also, knowing their personalities, either one of them will wreck anyone standing in their way of a championship. This is especially the case if the man in their way happens to be Joey Logano.
Martin Truex Jr. getting even
Martin Truex Jr. made it very clear after the race at Martinsville Speedway that Joey Logano would not be winning the 2018 championship.
I can see a scenario that I just hope and pray happens to come true on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Picture there being only a few laps left late in the race and it’s down to Martin Truex Jr. and Logano, with Truex Jr. right behind Joey Logano. Just thinking about seeing the #22 Pennzoil Ford being so close to victory and getting dumped by Truex Jr. makes me happy.
Final thoughts
By and large, I am not wishing any ill will towards Joey Logano. I just don’t feel that there is any way that he will stand alone at the end of the race on Sunday as the newly crowned NASCAR Cup Series champion.
All you need to do is Google “Joey Logano Fight” and you’ll see several videos of Logano involved in post-race scuffles. In my opinion, he won’t win Sunday because he’s dug himself way too big of a hole with other drivers that they simply will do anything to keep him from winning it all.
Do you think there is any chance Joey Logano will win the NASCAR Cup Series championship this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway? If you had to guess, who will be the driver to keep him from winning by getting him back for past incidents?
