Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton closed out the 21-race 2018 Formula 1 season by winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit. This victory in his 11th victory of his championship-winning season and the 73rd of his Formula 1 career.
Hamilton won the 55-lap race around the 21-turn, 3.451-mile (5.554-kilometer) Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates after starting it from the pole position. He won it by 2.581 seconds over Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who finished in second place.

Renault Sport’s Carlos Sainz Jr., Alfa Romeo Sauber rookie Charles Leclerc, Racing Point Force India’s Sergio Perez and Haas teammates Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.
The race featured a total of three lead changes among three drivers. Aside of Hamilton, who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 29 laps led, two other drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Ricciardo and Bottas.
Of the 20 drivers who started the race, 15 finished it and eight finished it on the lead lap. The five drivers who were forced to retire from the race were Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie Pierre Gasly, Force India’s Esteban Ocon, Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg.
Of these five retirements, Hulkenberg’s was by far the most notable. On the first lap of the race, he and Grosjean made wheel-to-wheel contact, sending the German’s car into a barrel roll. He ended up flipping upside down twice before hitting the wall upside down. He got out of the car under his own power. The four other drivers who were forced to retire from the race retired as a result of mechanical issues.
