Will IndyCar return to Surfers Paradise in the 2020 season?
By Asher Fair
There are rumors that IndyCar may return to Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in Queensland, Australia in the 2020 season. Will this end up happening?
There have not been any points-paying IndyCar races held at Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in Queensland, Australia since the 2007 Champ Car season, which was the 17th consecutive season during which a race was held at the temporary street circuit.
However, there is a chance that this will change in the near future, as there are rumors that an IndyCar race could take place at the 20-turn, 2.77-mile (4.458-kilometer) Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in February of 2020.
Here is what Mark Miles, the president and CEO of Hulman & Company, the owners of IndyCar, had to say about IndyCar possible returning to Surfers Paradise in the 2020 season, according to Motorsport.
"“We are working hard, and it was made public by the premier of Queensland in Australia on the possibility of having a return to Surfers Paradise in Queensland on the Gold Coast. If that’s possible, it could be done for probably February of 2020. That’s work that is very intensified right now and is something that hopefully might be achieved and finalized in the next couple of months. There’s a possibility to promote a great event.”"

The last time Surfers Paradise Street Circuit hosted any IndyCar race was in 2008 when it hosted an exhibition race after the 2008 season ended.
Six drivers who still compete in IndyCar on a full-time basis competed in that race. Those six drivers are Scott Dixon, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti, Tony Kanaan and Will Power.
There are two other active full-time IndyCar drivers who have competed in races at Surfers Paradise Street Circuit before. These two drivers are Sebastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud.
Of the eight active full-time drivers who have competed in at least one race at Surfers Paradise Street Circuit before, only two have been victorious at the track. Hunter-Reay won the race there in the 2004 Champ Car season and Bourdais won the races there in the 2005 and 2007 Champ Car seasons.
Will IndyCar return to Surfers Paradise Street Circuit, and if so, will the series make its return to the track in the 2020 season? There is still more than a year before February of 2020, but the IndyCar schedule is typically released toward the end of the active season, so expect to know sooner rather than later.
