A.J. Foyt is set to advance to the championship of the IndyCar “GOAT” poll against an opponent who has not yet been determined.

A.J. Foyt became the first of two IndyCar drivers who will advance to the fourth and final round, the championship round, of the IndyCar “GOAT” poll in which fans can vote for the driver who they believe is the sport’s greatest of all-time.

Foyt entered the 16-driver bracket as the #1 seed. The seeds for each of the 16 drivers in this bracket were determined by a mathematical formula involving two variables: championships and race victories. Championship count as 10 points each while race victories count as one point each.

No one was all that close to Foyt when it came to seeding, as he earned an all-time record 67 victories and an all-time record seven championships throughout his IndyCar career to earn a total of 137 points using this formula.

The closest driver to him in terms of seeding was Scott Dixon, who earned 94 points using this formula to enter the bracket as the #2 seed as a result of the fact that he has earned 44 victories and five championships over the course of his IndyCar career thus far.

Simply put, Foyt advancing to the championship was not surprising. He pretty much coasted through the bracket to get to this point, which was also not surprising.

In the first round, the round of 16, Foyt was matched up against #16 Rodger Ward, who earned 26 victories and won two championships throughout his IndyCar career. Foyt got 100% of the vote in this matchup.

In the second round, the round of 8, Foyt was matched up against #8 Bobby Unser, who defeated #9 Ted Horn in the round of 16. Unser earned 35 victories and won two championships over the course of his IndyCar career. Foyt got 97% of the vote while Unser got the other 3%.

Finally, in the third round, the round of 4, Foyt was matched up against #5 Jeff Gordon, who defeated #12 Michael Andretti in the round of 16 and upset #4 Sebastien Bourdais in the round of 8. Franchitti earned 31 victories and won four championships over the course of his IndyCar career. Foyt got 91% of the vote while Franchitti got the other 9%.

Foyt’s opponent in the championship has not yet been determined. He is set to be matched up against the winner of the poll between #7 Rick Mears and #3 Mario Andretti, which is scheduled to continue until 6:00 a.m. ET tomorrow after beginning at 6:00 a.m. ET this morning.
