The championship of the IndyCar “GOAT” poll is set. Who is the sport’s greatest driver of all-time, A.J. Foyt or Mario Andretti?

IndyCar fans have spoken, and the two drivers set to be matched up against one another in the fourth and final round, the championship round, of the IndyCar “GOAT” poll are A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti.

Foyt was the #1 seed in the 16-driver bracket that has been narrowed down to just two drivers over the last few weeks. Andretti, meanwhile, was the #3 seed behind Foyt and #2 Scott Dixon.

Foyt advanced to the IndyCar GOAT poll championship by defeating #16 Rodger Ward in the first round, the round of 16, before defeating #8 Bobby Unser in the second round, the round of 8, and #5 Dario Franchitti in the third round, the round of 4.

Foyt received 100% of the vote in his round of 16 matchup with Ward. In his round of 8 matchup with Unser, Foyt received 97% of the vote while Unser received the other 3%, and in his round of 4 matchup with Franchitti, Foyt received 91% of the vote while Franchitti received the other 9%.

Andretti advanced to the IndyCar GOAT poll championship by defeating #14 Sam Hornish Jr. in the round of 16 before defeating #6 Al Unser Sr. in the round of 8 and #7 Rick Mears in the round of 4.

Andretti received 92% of the vote in his round of 16 matchup with Hornish Jr. while Hornish Jr. received the other 8%. In his round of 8 matchup with Unser, Andretti received 82% of the vote while Unser received the other 18%, and in his round of 4 matchup with Mears, Andretti received 79% of the vote while Mears received the other 21%.

So who is the GOAT?

While statistics do not always tell the whole story, I will leave you with a few notable ones before the poll between these two drivers takes place.

Foyt competed in IndyCar for 37 seasons, and he drove full-time in 23 of them. Throughout his career in the sport, he drove in a total of 369 races. He won an all-time record seven championships, and he also earned an all-time record 67 victories and led 6,621 laps.

Andretti competed in IndyCar for 31 seasons, and he drove full-time in 24 of them. Throughout his career in the sport, he drove in an all-time record 407 races. He won four championships, and he also earned 52 victories and led an all-time record 7,595 laps.
