NASCAR Cup Series: Kyle Busch nearing contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing
By Asher Fair
Kyle Busch is reportedly nearing another contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing ahead of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Kyle Busch has competed in the NASCAR Cup Series since the 2004 season, and he has competed in the series on a full-time basis since the 2005 season. He drove the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet from the 2005 season through the 2007 season, and he has driven the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota since the 2008 season.
Ahead of the 2019 season, which is scheduled to get underway this Sunday, February 17 with the 61st annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, the 33-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada native is reportedly closing in on a new contract extension to continue driving the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in future seasons.
Busch’s current contract is believed to expire at the end of the 2019 season. In November of 2015, he and Joe Gibbs Racing announced that they had agreed on multi-year contract extension.
Here is what Busch had to say about a new contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing, according to NASCAR.
"“We’re in discussions right now. We’re talking. It’s all been agreed to. It’s just a matter of putting a pen to the paper, so. We’re all good.”"
Over the course of his Cup Series career, Busch has competed in 498 races and earned 51 victories, 183 top five finishes, 269 top 10 finishes and 31 pole positions. He has led 15,850 of the 138,874 laps that he has completed, and he has recorded an average career starting position of 12.3 and an average career finishing position of 14.0.

Since he began driving for Joe Gibbs Racing in the 2008 season, Busch has competed in 384 races and earned 47 victories, 153 top five finishes, 218 top 10 finishes and 29 pole positions. He has led 14,278 of the 107,778 laps that he has completed, and he has recorded an average starting position of 11.0 and an average finishing position of 12.8.
Busch, who won the 2015 Cup Series championship and has qualified for the Championship 4 in each of the last four seasons, has earned at least one victory in each of his 14 seasons as a full-time Cup Series driver. His streak of 14 consecutive seasons with at least one victory is the longest active streak of its kind, and it is just four seasons shy of tying Richard Petty’s record. Petty won at least one race in 18 consecutive seasons from the 1960 season through the 1977 season.
In all likelihood, the exact details of Kyle Busch’s new contract extension will not be disclosed, just as the exact details of the contract extension that he signed in November of 2015 were not disclosed. However, all signs point to his new contract extension being for at least three more seasons in the NASCAR Cup Series.
