IndyCar: Colton Herta tops Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course test

Colton Herta topped the speed chart in the Honda test session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course ahead of the IndyCar race at the track in under two weeks.
Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta topped the speed chart in the Honda test session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course ahead of the IndyCar race at the track, the IndyCar Grand Prix, in just under two weeks.
A total of 14 drivers, all Honda drivers, participated in this test session at the 13-turn, 2.439-mile (3.925-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway natural terrain road course in Speedway, Indiana ahead of the 85-lap race at the track, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 11.
Herta topped the speed chart in this test session by recording a top lap time of 69.5283 seconds (126.285 miles per hour) in his #88 Honda. He finished just 0.1370 seconds (0.248 miles per hour) ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, who recorded a top lap time of 69.6653 seconds (126.037 miles per hour) in his #9 Honda.

Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist, Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five by finishing in third, fourth and fifth place in their #10 Honda, #60 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively.
Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson, Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi, Dale Coyne Racing rookie Santino Ferrucci, Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe and Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #7 Honda, #27 Honda, #19 Honda, #5 Honda and #98 Honda, respectively.
The other four drivers who participated in this test session were Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammates Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal and Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach. They finished in 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th place in their #18 Honda, #30 Honda, #15 Honda and #26 Honda, respectively.
All 14 of the drivers who participated in this eight-hour test session recorded top lap times that were within 0.9012 seconds (1.616 miles per hour) of Herta’s overall top lap time, as the top lap time of last place finisher Veach was 70.4295 seconds (124.669 miles per hour).
These 14 drivers combined to record a total of 1,035 laps during this test session. Bourdais recorded the high amount of laps, 97, while Herta, Hinchcliffe Sato and Rahal recorded the lowest amount, 60.
