Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Will he make it three in a row this weekend?
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, meaning that he is set to go for his third consecutive victory at the track in this Sunday’s race, the Spanish Grand Prix.
The last race at the 16-turn, 2.892-mile (4.655-kilometer) Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya road course in Montmeló, Catalonia, Spain that was won by a driver other than Hamilton was held in May of 2016.
This race was won by Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. Hamilton, meanwhile, was forced to retire from it as a result of his involvement in a first-lap crash with teammate Nico Rosberg, and he was officially scored in 22nd place.

In the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton started from the pole position before winning it by 3.490 seconds over Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in second place and 75.820 seconds over Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo, the final driver on the lead lap, in third, but this victory did not come easily.
The 66-lap race featured five lead changes among three leaders. Vettel led more laps than anybody else in the field with 32 laps led while Hamilton finished closely behind him with 31 laps led. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas also led three laps before he was forced to retire with an engine issue with 28 laps remaining.
In the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton started from the pole position and was virtually untouchable. He led 58 of the race’s 66 laps, as Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen led eight laps after Hamilton came into the pits before making a pit stop of his own. Hamilton won the race, which featured two lead changes, by a whopping 20.593 seconds over Bottas in second place.
Will Hamilton earn his third consecutive victory at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in this Sunday’s race, or will a driver other than Hamilton win at the track for the first time since Verstappen did so in May of 2016?
After Hamilton dominated the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix the way he did, winning the race by the largest margin of victory of the 2018 season and since Rosberg won the 2016 Russian Grand Prix by 25.022 seconds over him in second place, he should be considered the clear-cut favorite to get the job done this weekend.
That’s without even considering the fact that the only driver who has won more Spanish Grands Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya than he has is seven-time champion Michael Schumacher.
Will Lewis Hamilton earn his third consecutive Spanish Grand Prix victory by winning this weekend’s race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya? This race, which is the fifth race of the 2019 Formula 1 season, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 12, and it is set to be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at 9:10 a.m. ET.
