Lewis Hamilton earned his third victory of the 2019 Formula 1 season by dominating the season’s fifth race, the Spanish Grand Prix, at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton earned his third victory of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season and his third victory in the last four races by dominating the season’s fifth race, the Spanish Grand Prix, at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from start to finish.

Hamilton started 66-lap race around the 16-turn, 2.892-mile (4.654-kilometer) Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya road course in Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain in second place alongside teammate Valtteri Bottas on the pole position.

But the 34-year-old Briton passed the 29-year-old Finn at the start of the race and never looked back, leading all 66 of the laps following the race’s lone lead change in turn one on the opening lap.

Bottas ended up finishing the race in second place a total of 4.074 seconds behind Hamilton, giving Mercedes their fifth consecutive 1-2 finish to start the season. Never before in Formula 1 history had a team opened up a season with more than three consecutive 1-2 finishes.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen finished the race in third place ahead of Scuderia Ferrari teammates Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc in fourth and fifth, respectively. Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly, Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Haas’ Romain Grosjean rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.

Of the 20 drivers who started the race, 18 finished it. Of the 18 drivers who finished it, only ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica failed to finish on the lead lap.

The two drivers who failed to finish this race were SportPesa Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and McLaren rookie Lando Norris, who were involved in a crash in turn two on lap 46 to begin the race’s lone safety car period.

This safety car period stacked up the field, but Hamilton was able to utilize it for what was effectively a free second pit stop before the field was stacked up. Following the ensuing restart, he was never under pressure from anybody and once again pulled away from the field.
