IndyCar: Ed Jones tops no-tow speed chart in third 2019 Indy 500 practice

Part-time IndyCar driver Ed Jones topped the no-tow speed chart in the third practice session for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.

For the second time in three practice sessions so far for the crown jewel on the IndyCar schedule, the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Ed Carpenter Racing Scuderia Corsa’s Ed Jones topped the no-tow speed chart. In the third practice session for this race, he recorded the fastest lap times both with and without a tow.

All 35 of the drivers who completed at least one lap in this practice session completed at least one lap without a tow. This practice session was a rain-shortened session that ended at around 4:30 p.m. ET. The checkered flag officially flew at roughly 4:45 p.m. ET after it was initially scheduled to fly at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Jones topped the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by recording a top lap time of 40.0076 seconds (224.957 miles per hour) around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana in his #63 Chevrolet.

Chevrolet drivers took each of the top five positions on the no-tow speed chart in this practice session.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot gave Ed Carpenter Racing a top two sweep on the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by finishing in second place in his #21 Chevrolet. Team Penske teammates Simon Pagenaud and Will Power finished in third and fourth in their #22 Chevrolet and #12 Chevrolet, respectively, while Carlin’s Charlie Kimball finished in fifth in his #23 Chevrolet.

Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti was the highest finishing Honda driver on the no-tow speed chart in this practice session. He finished in sixth place in his #98 Honda.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato, Ed Carpenter Racing’s Ed Carpenter, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top 10 on the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #30 Honda, #20 Chevrolet, #2 Chevrolet and #7 Honda, respectively.
