How will qualifying be conducted for the Monster Energy Open and the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway?

The Monster Energy Open and the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race are both scheduled to take place tomorrow evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The 24-driver field for the 50-lap Open around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina has been set, and 15 of the 19 drivers for the 85-lap All-Star Race around the track have been confirmed as well.

Three of the remaining four All-Star Race participants are set to be determined during the Open by the results of each of the race’s three stages and the remaining participant is set to be determined after the Open by the final results of the All-Star Fan Vote.

The qualifying sessions for these races are set to take place using two different formats.

The 24 drivers who are set to compete in the Open are set to qualify the traditional way via single-car qualifying runs but with two rounds as opposed ton one. The second round is set to be the shootout for the pole position and feature the fastest eight drivers from the first round.

Meanwhile, the 15 drivers who are already locked into the All-Star Race are set to complete three laps around Charlotte Motor Speedway and come into the pits for a four-tire pit stop.

Additionally, to make things even more interesting, there will be no speed limit on pit road for the All-Star Race qualifying session. How quickly each driver completes his qualification run will determine where he will line up for the All-Star Race.

The three stage winners of the Open will start the All-Star Race in 16th, 17th and 18th place, respectively, while the winner of the All-Star Fan Vote (technically the highest finisher in the All-Star Fan Vote who does not win one of the three stages of the Open) will start in 19th.
