Josef Newgarden earned his second victory of the 2019 IndyCar season by winning the season’s seventh race, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 1.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden earned his second victory of the 2019 IndyCar season by winning the 17-race season’s seventh race, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 1, at the Raceway on Belle Isle.

Newgarden, who started the 43-lap race, which was originally scheduled to be a 70-lap race but became a 75-minute race as a result of rain, around the 14-turn, 2.35-mile (3.782-kilometer) Raceway on Belle Isle temporary street circuit on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan in second place in his #2, won it by 0.8237 over Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi, who started from the pole position, in second in his #27 Honda.

Honda drivers rounded out the rest of the top five in Chevrolet’s backyard, as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato, Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay finished in third, fourth and fifth place in their #30 Honda, #10 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud finished in sixth place in his #22 Chevrolet while Honda drivers rounded out the rest of the top nine. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal, Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe finished in seventh, eighth and ninth in their #15 Honda, #26 Honda and #5 Honda, respectively.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot was the highest finishing non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver of the race. He finished in 10th place in his #21 Chevrolet.

The race featured only one lead change among two drivers, and this lead change took place as a result of a timely pit stop by Newgarden, who led the race’s final 25 laps after Rossi led the first 18.

The race featured a total of five caution flag periods, and it was the third caution flag period that changed the complexion of the race. Newgarden had just made his pit stop before the caution flag came out as a result of Ed Carpenter Racing Scuderia Corsa’s Ed Jones hitting the wall in turn seven on lap 17. Meanwhile, Rossi had not yet done so.

While IndyCar strangely and controversially did not wait for the field to pack up before opening the pits, which would have sent several other drivers from the back of the pack who had already made their pit stops, most notably Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti and Dale Coyne Racing rookie Santino Ferrucci, to the front of the field, Newgarden still ended up ahead of Rossi after Rossi made his pit stop during this caution flag period.

Of the 22 drivers who started the race, only Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon failed to finish it. He crashed in turn six to bring out the race’s fourth caution flag period on lap 24.
