IndyCar: Josef Newgarden takes pole for 2019 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 2

Josef Newgarden took the pole position for the eighth race on the 2019 IndyCar schedule, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 2, at the Raceway on Belle Isle.

After winning Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 1 at the Raceway on Belle Isle yesterday afternoon, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden took the pole position for Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 2, the eighth race of the 17-race 2019 IndyCar season, at the track.

Newgarden took the pole position for this 70-lap around the 14-turn, 2.35-mile (3.782-kilometer) Raceway on Belle Isle temporary street circuit on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan race by recording a top lap time of 74.8607 seconds (113.0099 miles per hour) in his #2 Chevrolet in the second of two rounds of group qualifying. This pole position is his first pole position of the season.

By recording the top lap time in this second round of qualifying, Newgarden ensured that all 11 drivers who qualified in this round will start the race in odd-numbered starting positions.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi recorded the second fastest overall lap time of this qualifying session and the fastest lap time in the first round of ground qualifying. As a result, he is set to start the race on the front row alongside Newgarden in second place in his #27 Honda.

Newgarden is the only Chevrolet driver who is set to start the race in the top seven. Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach, Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta, Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe and Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist, a rookie, are set to start in third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place in their #26 Honda, #88 Honda, #5 Honda, #9 Honda and #10 Honda, respectively.

Carlin rookie Patricio O’Ward was the second highest qualifying Chevrolet driver for this race. He qualified in eighth place in his #31 Chevrolet. Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais and Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot are set to round out the top 10 on the starting grid after qualifying in ninth and 10th in their #18 Honda and #21 Chevrolet, respectively.
