IndyCar: Max Chilton will no longer compete in oval races
By Asher Fair
Throughout the remainder of the 2019 IndyCar season, Max Chilton will only compete in the races on road and street courses as opposed to ovals.
Since the start of the 2018 IndyCar season when Carlin entered the series, Max Chilton has driven the #59 Carlin Chevrolet in each of the 24 races that have been contested, sans the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as he failed to qualify for this race.
But the 27-year-old Briton is now no longer set to compete full-time in IndyCar, as from this point forward, he will only compete in the races on road and street courses, not on ovals.
A total of four of the remaining races on the 17-race 2019 schedule are oval races, so Chilton is only slated to compete in five races throughout the rest of the season.

Chilton will not compete in this Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway, and he will not compete in the race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, July 20, the race at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, August 18 or the race at Gateway Motorsports Park (now World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway) on Saturday, August 24.
He is set still set to compete in the race at Road America on Sunday, June 23, the race at Exhibition Place on Sunday, July 14, the race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday, July 28, the race at Portland International Raceway on Sunday, September 1 and the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, September 22.
Here is what Chilton had to say about his decision to longer compete in IndyCar oval races, according to Motorsport.
"“I would like to thank Gallagher for being supportive of my decision to not compete in the remaining oval races this season – I am extremely fortunate to have such a supportive partner. Risk Management is a central consideration of both Gallagher and myself in how we operate.“I’m excited and pleased by the outstanding proactive work being done by IndyCar around driver safety and the innovation of the solution developed in partnership with Red Bull Advanced Technologies that has created a new Aeroscreen. The innovative solution will be the most advanced single-seater driver head protection in the world and will be introduced in 2020.”"
This news comes not even one week after it was announced the Carlin rookie Patricio O’Ward will not compete in either of the two remaining oval races in which he was scheduled to compete this season. He was set to compete in the races at Iowa Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
Through the first eight races of the 2019 season, Chilton has competed in the seven road or street course races. He has recorded a top finish of 14th place in the race on the streets of Long Beach, California, and his average finishing position is 17.57. He sits in 23rd in the championship standings.
With this Saturday night’s IndyCar race scheduled to take place at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, Max Chilton is not set to return to action until the REV Group Grand Prix at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on Sunday, June 23. NBC is set to broadcast this race live beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET, and the race is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
