As a result of his crash in the second round of qualifying for the 2019 Formula 1 season’s seventh race, the Canadian Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen is set to start this race from the pit lane.

Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was at risk of failing to advance from the second round of qualifying to the third and final round of qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, which is the seventh of 21 races on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule.

Magnussen sat in 10th place on the speed chart as time was winding down in the second round of qualifying for this 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.71-mile (4.361-kilometer) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course on Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Among drivers who were behind Magnussen and aiming to bump him from the final transfer spot to the final round of qualifying was Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who clearly had the pace to advance over Magnussen. Magnussen’s teammate, Romain Grosjean, was also among these drivers, and he had a change to bump Magnussen out as well.

But then Magnussen crashed his Ferrari-powered car coming out of turn 14, red-flagging the second round and bringing it to its end.

This red flag prevented Verstappen, Grosjean, Scuderia Toro Rosso teammates Daniil Kvyat and Alexander Albon, a rookie, and Alfa Romeo Racing rookie Antonio Giovinazzi from having a chance to advance to the third and final round.

Meanwhile, Magnussen still sat in 10th place on the speed chart and advanced to the final round because of it. He obviously didn’t participate in this round of qualifying for the race, but he still officially qualified for it in 10th place.

However, the 26-year-old Dane will not start this afternoon’s race in 10th place. Because of his crash, his team had to change his chassis, and as a result, he is set to start the race from the pit lane, meaning he will effectively roll off in 20th (last).

Here is what Haas team principal Gunther Steiner had to say about the matter, according to Motorsport.

"“We need to change the gearbox. There’s no point to try to start somewhere in the back end with the C5 tyre. We start from pit lane. The best way is to change the chassis. The quickest and safest way is to do that. And start from pit lane for once.”"
