Lewis Hamilton earned a controversial victory, his fifth victory of the 2019 Formula 1 season, in the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel crossed the finish line in first place after dominating the seventh race on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule, the Canadian Grand Prix, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after starting from the pole position, but it was Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton who was classified as the winner.

Hamilton started the 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.71-mile (4.361-kilometer) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course on Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada alongside Vettel in second place, and he finished it 1.342 seconds behind Vettel.

However, Vettel was issued a five-second time penalty after going off the track between turns three and four while leading on lap 48 and rejoining the track in an “unsafe” manner ahead of Hamilton, so Hamilton officially won the race by 3.658 seconds over Vettel in second place.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium by finishing in third place. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen rounded out the top five by finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Renault teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg, Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly, SportPesa Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place.

The race featured a total of three lead changes among three drivers. Vettel led more laps than anybody else in the field with 62 laps led and only failed to lead laps as a result of the fact that he pitted before the other two drivers who led laps, Hamilton and Leclerc. Hamilton led only two laps while Leclerc led the other six. Of the 20 drivers who started the race, 18 finished it, and of these 18 drivers, five finished on the lead lap.
