IndyCar: Ryan Hunter-Reay tops first 2019 Road America practice session

Ryan Hunter-Reay topped the opening practice session for the 2019 IndyCar season’s 10th race, the REV Group Grand Prix at Road America.

Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay opened up the race weekend for the 17-race 2019 IndyCar season’s 10th race, the REV Group Grand Prix at Road America, by topping the speed chart in the first practice session.

Hunter-Reay topped the speed chart in the opening practices session for this 55-lap race around the 14-turn, 4.048-mile (6.515-kilometer) Road America natural terrain road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin by recording a top lap time of 103.7556 seconds (140.4531 miles per hour) in his #28 Honda.

Hunter-Reay led a top three Honda sweep of this practice session, as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon finished in second and third place in their #30 Honda and #9 Honda, respectively.

The three Team Penske drivers were the highest finishing Chevrolet drivers of the practice session. Led by Will Power in his #12 Chevrolet, they finished in fourth, fifth and seventh place. Josef Newgarden finished in fifth in his #2 Chevrolet while Simon Pagenaud finished in seventh in his #22 Chevrolet.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi split up this group of three Team Penske drivers by finishing in sixth place in his #27 Honda. Meanwhile, the highest finishing non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver of this practice session was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot. Pigot finished in eighth in his #21 Chevrolet.

Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe and Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti rounded out the top 10 to give Honda the 6-4 advantage, as they finished in ninth and 10th place in their #5 Honda and #98 Honda, respectively.

The second practice session for the REV Group Grand Prix at Road America is scheduled to take place this afternoon from 4:00 p.m. ET to 4:45 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold. NBC Sports Gold is also set to broadcast the third and final practice session for this race tomorrow afternoon from 12:00 p.m. ET to 12:45 p.m. ET.

Qualifying for the 2019 IndyCar season’s 10th race is scheduled to take place from 4:00 p.m. ET to 5:15 p.m. ET tomorrow afternoon, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold. It is also set to be shown on NBC Sports Network on a delay from 5:00 p.m. ET to 6:30 p.m. ET. The race itself is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 23, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET.
