IndyCar: Colton Herta tops no-tow speed chart in first 2019 Iowa practice

Colton Herta topped the no-tow speed chart in the first of two practice sessions for the Iowa 300, the 2019 IndyCar season’s 12th race, at Iowa Speedway.

Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta topped the no-tow speed chart in the opening practice session for the Iowa 300, the 12th race on the 17-race 2019 IndyCar schedule at Iowa Speedway.

Herta topped the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by recording a top lap time of 18.7086 seconds (172.0278 miles per hour) around the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) Iowa Speedway oval in Newton, Iowa in his #88 Honda without a tow.

Only nine of the 22 drivers who participated in this practice session were able to complete a lap without a tow.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot was the fastest of the other eight drivers who got to do so, and he was the fastest Chevrolet driver of this practice session without a tow. He finished in second place in his #21 Chevrolet.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud, Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal rounded out the top five on the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by finishing in third, fourth and fifth place in their #22 Chevrolet, #27 Honda and #15 Honda, respectively.

Andretti Herta Autosport’s Marco Andretti, the lone former winner at Iowa Speedway who completed a lap without a tow in this practice session, finishing in sixth place in his #98 Honda.

Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson, Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais and Carlin’s Sage Karam rounded out the rest of the no-tow speed chart in this practice session by finishing in seventh, eighth and ninth place in their #7 Honda, #18 Honda and #31 Chevrolet, respectively.

Qualifying for the Iowa 300 set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET, and it is scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. ET. The second and final practice session for the 2019 IndyCar season’s 12th race is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET this evening. The race itself is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network tomorrow evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET, and it is scheduled to begin shortly thereafter at 7:10 p.m. ET.
